Nøkkelingredienser

Valerian, Valeriana officinalis

For centuries Valerian has been used for the treatment of insomnia; related botanical species are also present in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. The root, rich in active ingredients, has an intense aroma due to the presence of isovaleric acid. The presence of alkaloids and flavonoids gives the plant soothing and relaxing properties, which help the nervous system when subjected to mental stress, anxiety and worries that prevent restful sleep. Sedative, calming and hypno-inducing substances, promote sleep, enhancing the quality of rest.

Lemon Balm, Melissa officinalis

Lemon Balm, also known as lemongrass or cedar grass, is traditionally used in herbal medicine against nervous excitement. Lemon balm was an ever-present element in the gardens of Benedictine monasteries and was part of the composition of one of their famous liqueurs, the “elixir of long life”. Its pleasant aroma and flavor are close to that of the lemon and are due to the presence of essential oil in the leaves, which are used in states of anxiety with somatization of the gastrointestinal system.

Chamomile, Matricaria chamomilla

Chamomile flowers are used in infusions with sedative, calming and anti-inflammatory virtues. The presence of flavonoids and coumarins guarantees the plant antispasmodic properties that produce muscle relaxation. Due to its muscle relaxant virtues, chamomile is used as a useful sedative in case of nervous tension, stress and anxiety. Moreover its anti-inflammatory effects also help against inflammation, digestion and heartburn.

Passiflora, Passiflora incarnata

Passiflora, most commonly known as passionflower, is the vine that bear the juicy passion fruit. This plant has calming, sedative and anxiolytic properties and is one of the most used remedies in herbal medicine for nervous disorders. The flavonoids contained in it act on the spinal cord and stimulate a physiological sleep without nocturnal awakenings, morning numbness and without the contraindication of addiction. Of this plant, of Mexican origin, there is already evidence of use by the Aztecs as a relaxant.

Silver Lime, Tilia tomentosa

We know that the Nordic peoples revered this sacred plant as a symbol of longevity, since it can reach up to 2000 years. Its flowers and leaves are used in phytotherapy for the rich concentration of flavonoids, tannins, essential oils and coumarins, useful in the treatment of stress, insomnia, anxiety and headaches. It is said that Tilia tomentosa can resolve the side effects of our “tormented” state of mind.

Hawthorn, Crataegus Oxyacantha

ABelonging to the Rosaceae family, the hawthorn’s name derives from the Greek kràtaigos, a term that recalls the concept of “strength”. The benefits of hawthorn are mainly associated with its cardioprotective and cardiotonic properties. What’s more, the presence of the vitexin active ingredient gives the plant a natural sedative, spasmolytic and anxiolytic action beneficial against anxiety, insomnia, agitation, anguish and nervousness.

Sweet Orange, Citrus sinensis

The peel of the sweet orange is rich in essential oils which, in addition to giving a pleasant aroma to our mix, have significant health benefits.  Its sedative and calming properties are useful in combating insomnia, counteracting nervous disorders, depression, anxiety and nervousness. Furthermore, it is an antispasmodic remedy that has a relaxing action on the muscles and is therefore indicated in case of muscle tension, general fatigue and stress.

Mallow, Malva silvestris

Mallow has been known for its emollient virtues since ancient times.  No wonder its name derives from the Latin mollire, meaning “capable of softening” and from the Greek malachè, “making soft”. Its flowers and leaves are rich in mucilages that cover the mucous membranes with a viscous layer that have a protective function against irritants. Hence its emollient and anti-inflammatory properties. Infused tea with marsh mallow is recommended as a calming and soothing beverage best taken in the evening to relax and sleep better. It also has digestive virtues and is functional in case of acid reflux symptoms.

Asperula, Galium odoratum

Galium odoratum, also known as woodruff or asperula, is commonly found between May and July in the wild meadows above 1000 meters. It is traditionally used in folk medicine for its many qualities, such as tonic, digestive, sedative, diuretic, cholagogue and emmenagogue. Thanks to its properties and its delicious flavor (coumarin), it is often used to flavor grappa and herbal teas.
